Oh, The Horror! #28: The Vampire Bat

Haven't been watching as much horror flicks as I'd like to due to school getting in the way, etc. Still have some stuff to do during my spring break, but someone I know from the net sent me a link of some old classical horror films that he knew I'd love so I decided to check it out. Man, am I excited when I saw the flicks they have in their selection. He recommended The Vampire Bat which I just finished watching just a few minutes ago. Not bad at all. I felt it was a little slow at first, but man did it start to pick up by the second half of the movie. In a small village named Kleinschloss, each night a new murder is discovered. The towns people begin to believe that a vampire is at bay and causing the murders due to teeth marks on the sides of the neck. The main inspector on the case, Karl, is highly skeptical on this whole deal while Dr. Von Niemann cares for each of the victims. A strange mentally disturbed man by the name of Herman Gleib is the main suspect as the vampire due to his love of bats.

After going after Gleib, more story details are discovered about this whole murder situation which I'll back off from spoiling. Not a great movie that keeps you on your toes but it's a good hour to spend when you have nothing to do. I did like some camera movements, especially in the beginning. The characters were very well done, Dr. Von Niemann and Herman being my absolute favorite, Herman being played by Dwight Frye, best known for playing Fritz in the original Frankenstein movie.. And boy, I wish I had some pop corn when the revelation of the murders started making sense.

If you're a fan of the original King Kong, actress Fay Wray, the original scream queen, plays the love interest of Karl, who was played by Melvyn Douglas.

Directed by Frank R. Strayer.
